What the role involves
You will support the Beaver Leader(s) in operation of the Beaver Colony which is the section for our youngest members who are aged 6 – 81/2 years . In particular:
- Support the delivery of a safe, exciting and stimulating Balanced Programme for the Beaver Colony taking into account the needs, interests and abilities of the Young People.
- Introducing Beavers to outdoor activities, giving them the opportunity to be creative, explore their local community and experience the excitement of a Beaver Scout Sleepover with their friends.
- Providing regular opportunities and supporting the Beavers to express their views on the programme and running on the Beaver Colony, and then helping to ensure that those views are taken into account.
Where and when
The Beaver Colony meet on a Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m at the Aylestone Scout & Guide Hut.
How much time do I have to commit?
It would be really great if you are able to make most Colony evenings and there is no need to make an open ended commitment. We are flexible to how long you want to do the role for and can agree a fixed period of time. At the end of this time period, you can continue in the same role, agree a new role or step down depending on your circumstances and available time.
We recognise that you may have other commitments, therefore we operate a flexible volunteering policy based around how much time you are able to give us, even if that is only 1 evening a month on a regular basis it would be great to have you as part of our team. A significant number of adults taking on a Leader role do so for between 2 and 5 years, others stay until their child(ren) move on from the Group whilst others because of th enjoyment they get out of it stay on for more than 10 years. It all comes down to what time and for how you feel you can commitment to Scouting, we will work with you to help make the role fit around your availability as best as we can.
Can I share the role with another adult leader?
Yes. We actively see a number of Assistant Leaders so that there is a large enough pool that they can have a rota so no one leader feels that they must be there every week.
Is previous experience needed?
No. You do not need any previous experience of Scouting, or Guiding, as training and support will be provided. The Group Scout Leader will support you and ensure that you get the training you need to feel comfortable in the role and being able to deliver a safe and exciting programme for the Beavers.
Training Requirement
You need to have completed the full training to gain your wood beads within 3 years.
Ongoing First Aid, Safeguarding & Safety need to be completed every 3 years.
